Few Canadian communities have the features that would allow themselves to be identified as Canada's Myrtle Beach, but Sarnia can do it. The city of 70,876 has a comfortable climate, excellent golfing, and beaches and waterfront areas to rival any other Canadian city. Located further south than 25% of the continental United States, this Michigan/Ontario border town breaks the stereotype that says that all Canadian communities experience harsh winters. Nearby Lake Huron helps moderate Sarnia's temperature, so winters are fairly mild and short, while summers are warm but not scorching. The summer offers a range of activities on the waterfront. The scenic St. Clair Parkway along the St. Clair River is a great place for camping, picnicking, boating and hiking. It also has a large water park, Bluewater Fun Park. Just outside the city on Lake Huron is Ontario's summer resort community, Grand Bend. With great beaches and a spectacular sunset, Grand Bend offers a wonderful summer getaway. Skydiving, golfing, horseback riding on the beach, jet skiing, and night clubbing are just a few of the activities available in the town. There are many attractions within the city of Sarnia itself. For plays or concerts, the historic Imperial Theatre is the place to be. Sports and gaming play a big role in life in Sarnia. Follow the puck at a game of the Sarnia Sting hockey team or place your bet at the Hiawatha Horse Park and Slots. The city also has a charity casino where you can try your luck. One of the testaments to Sarnia's success as a city is the longevity of its industries. It became the centre of Canada's oil industry in the 19th century when oilfields started pumping in the nearby towns of Petrolia and Oil Springs. Today, these historic towns have created a monument to their beginnings – the Oil Heritage District. There, you can watch oil being drawn just as it was in the 19th century. And the oil heritage lives on in Sarnia today: The city has a thriving petrochemical industry, playing host to companies such as Dow and Esso. While the oil industry has been central to Sarnia's development, the city is diversifying its economy. With call centres and the automotive sector becoming important growth areas, it is obvious that Sarnia still is a city of opportunity.
