Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

When you mention the name Saskatoon (or really, any prairie "town"), people invariably think of an unending flat plain of golden wheat. In fact, rumor has it that if you stand in Manitoba (approximately 350 kilometers or 217 miles, to the east of Saskatoon) you can see Alberta (approximately 250 kilometers or 155 miles, to the west)! But Saskatoon has so much more to offer than wheat – it also exports oats, barley, rye, flaxseed, and canola!

Seriously, though, Saskatoon puts the "culture" in agriculture. Don't believe me? Well … there is the Mendel Art Gallery & Civic Conservatory, the Saskatchewan International Film Festival For Young People, the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, and the Saskatoon Symphony. There is also the culturally diverse Riversdale District, which is home to the city's Chinatown.

And that's just the beginning. There is also the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival, the Northern Saskatchewan International Children's Festival, the Annual Saskatoon International Fringe Festival, and the Broadway Theatre.

Still not convinced? What about the Cameco Victoria Park Summer Festival? The Musèe Ukraina Museum (and no, it's not the same as The Ukrainian Museum of Canada)? The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival? Or the Saskatoon Summer Players? I could go on ….

And if you're looking to Saskatoon because you're looking for nature, you need not look further. Saskatoon has more than 120 hectares (296 acres) of riverbank parklands. You can hike through the Meewasin Valley and Cranberry Flats Conservation Area; go bird watching in the Beaver Creek Conservation Area; enjoy a river cruise on the Saskatoon Princess; check out the animals at the Saskatoon Zoo & Forestry Farm Park; or play a round of golf on one of Saskatoon's nine golf courses.
