Scarborough is one of six cities (along with Toronto, Etobicoke, North York, East York, and York) that merged in 1998 to form the "megacity" known as the City of Toronto. Although amalgamation caused Scarborough to lose its "separate legal identity," it has retained a unique culture and offers some of the best natural surroundings in the megacity. Check out the amazing views of the bluffs at Bluffers Park; formed by erosion of the packed clay soil, the Scarborough Bluffs run for approximately 14 kilometers (8 miles) and are 65 m (213 feet) above sea level at their highest point. Or, you can hike or horseback ride in the natural wilderness of the Rouge River Valley. History lovers can learn about Scarborough's past just by walking around – a series of historical murals have been painted on buildings throughout the area. Or, if you're interested in something a little more… spooky, there's the Taber Hill Ossuaries. An ancient Iroquois burial site, the bones interred here have been undisturbed for centuries. If old bones aren't really your cup of tea, you could always do some research on some other important Scarborough "historical" figures: Mike Myers, Jim Carrey, and the rock group the Barenaked Ladies, who were once barred from playing in Toronto because it was believed they actually were bare naked ladies. And speaking of Toronto… when the bright lights of the big city call you, you can simply jump on the TTC – or, maybe first, the distinctly Scarborough part of it, the Scarborough Rapid Transit (SRT) light rail line which links to the TTC subway line, and head west to Toronto.
