Shreveport, Louisiana

Shreveport is situated in northwestern Louisiana, on the bank of the Red River. It is located across the river from Bossier City and is 188 miles (302 kilometers) east of Dallas. Shreveport is the parish seat of Caddo Parish, and home to 200,145 people.

Shreveport's Riverfront is the pride of the city, and features a large number of casinos and riverboat cruises. There's also the beautiful RiverView Park and its spectacular waterfall, and a variety of shops, eateries, and entertainment venues found along the Louisiana Boardwalk. Another Riverfront attraction is the Long-Allen Bridge, which spans the Red River and links Shreveport with Bossier City. Each night, neon lights and fiber optic cables illuminate the bridge, transforming it into a spectacular work of public art.

Shreveport has a fascinating history, and a huge number of museums to interpret it. To learn about the city's past, visit the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, the Spring Street Museum, and the Stephens African American Museum. You can also head to the Caddo Pine Island Oil and Historical Museum to learn about the 1906 oil discovery of oil and its impact on the city; or the McNeill Street Pumping Station to learn about the steam-powered water plant which once supplied the city's drinking water. Lastly, there's the Ark-La-Tex Antique and Classic Vehicle Museum, which is home to antique cars, motorcycles, fire trucks, and other artifacts.

On the local arts scene, there's the Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. The Louisiana Hayride once staged radio broadcasts from Shreveport's Municipal Auditorium, and helped to launch the careers of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, George Jones, James Burton, and many others. This part of the city's musical history is preserved at the Stage of the Stars Musical Museum, where visitors can walk across the historic stage and tour rooms filled with musical memorabilia.

Another unique local attraction is the American Rose Center Gardens, which is the largest park in the nation dedicated exclusively to roses. Other outdoor destinations include the Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park, and the Soda Lake Wildlife Management Area, where you can enjoy fishing, hiking, and outstanding bird and wildlife viewing.

With this many attractions to choose from, you'll never run out of things to do in Shreveport!
