Silver City is a town in the southwestern corner of New Mexico. It is situated near the Arizona state border, 109 miles (175 kilometers) northwest of Las Cruces, 151 miles (243 kilometers) northwest of El Paso, and 199 miles (320 kilometers) northeast of Tucson. Silver City is the seat of Grant County, and is home to 10,545 people. This region was first inhabited by the Native Americans and later the Spanish. In the 1880s, a silver boom brought a flood of miners to the area and gave the city its name. The Silver City Museum is housed in an 1881 home, and contains 20,000 items ranging from mining and ranching displays to Victorian furniture and antique office equipment. The Big Ditch is a unique relic from the city's mining days. Mining operations in the surrounding hillsides made the area vulnerable to flooding, and between 1895 and 1906, a series of floods turned the city's Main Street into a 55-foot-deep (17-meter-deep) chasm. Today, the Big Ditch is the centerpiece of a tranquil city park. Notorious outlaw Billy the Kid was born and raised in Silver City, and you can go on a tour of his old haunts, including the hotel where he once washed dishes and the jail he escaped from at the age of 15. The city's downtown also contains many modern attractions, such as unique shops, eateries, and cafes. Yankie Street is home to several excellent galleries, which offer traditional artworks along with authentic Southwestern pottery and folk art. The prehistoric Mogollon people lived in the American Southwest and Northern Mexico from 150 CE until 1300–1400 CE, and are the ancestors of the Pueblo Indians. Today, traces of their lives can still be found in and around Silver City. The Western New Mexico University Museum contains a treasure trove of Mimbres Mogollon pottery, along with other Native American and historic artifacts. The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument are a 42-room Mogollon cave complex, and was inhabited in the late 1200s. These ancient dwellings are located in the Gila National Forest, which covers more than three million acres (one million hectares), and was the nation's first designated wilderness area. The forest offers endless recreational opportunities, including scenic drives, fishing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, soaking in the hot springs, and more in the Fort Bayard Wildlife Refuge.
