Sioux City, Iowa

Sioux City, Iowa, is situated on the Missouri River, near the South Dakota and Nebraska state borders. It is 83 miles (134 kilometers) southeast of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and 97 miles (156 kilometers) north of Omaha, Nebraska. Sioux City is the county seat of Woodbury County, and home to 85,013 residents.

The Lewis and Clark expedition passed through Sioux City in 1804, and the local Interpretive Center offers visitors a look at a typical day in the life of these famous explorers. During the expedition, Sergeant Charles Floyd lost his life, and he is commemorated by the 100-foot (30-meter) Sergeant Floyd Monument, and the Sergeant Floyd River Museum and Welcome Center. The museum also has information on the development of the Missouri River as a major shipping route, and many other aspects of local history. Other historic attractions include the Sioux City Public Museum, the Loren D. Callendar Gallery, and the Fourth Street Historic District, an area that's noted for its fine collection of late 19th century buildings, along with antique shops, pubs, and restaurants.

On the performing arts front, there are the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, the Siouxland Master Chorale, a chamber music group, and an annual concert series. Great plays are put on by LAMB Productions Theatre, the Sioux City Community Theatre, and the theater departments of Briar Cliff University and Morningside College. For art buffs, the Sioux City Art Center offers five galleries of fine permanent and traveling exhibitions. The Orpheum Theater is home to classical concerts, live theater, and movies, while the 10,000-seat Tyson Events Center hosts popular concerts, Broadway productions, and many sporting events.

Speaking of sports, Sioux City offers great golf courses, the IBP Ice Center for hockey players and skaters, and many other recreational facilities. For those who'd rather stay on the sidelines, there are the Explorers Baseball, Musketeers Hockey, and Bandits Indoor Football home teams to cheer for. Looking for something else to get your heart pumping? Sioux City is also home to a number of casinos.

For nature lovers, there are the Sioux City Parks, Stone State Park, and the Loess Hills Scenic Byways to explore. The Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center is your gateway to Woodbury County's Parks, and features butterfly and wildflower gardens, reptile and fish exhibits, and informative displays on the habitats of the Loess Hills region. Across the border in South Dakota, the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area in South Dakota offers a marina and miles of sandy beach, while the Adams House and Nature Preserve combines outdoor attractions with historical buildings and sites.

Offering something for everyone, Sioux City is a wonderful place to call home!
