Sioux Falls is located in southeast South Dakota, near the junction of South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. The city is situated on the Big Sioux River, 224 miles (360 kilometers) southeast of Pierre, 181 miles (291 kilometers) north of Omaha, and 270 miles (435 kilometers) southwest of Minneapolis. For a great overview of the area's history and culture, visit the Center for Western Studies, which offers a 35,000-volume archival library along with an impressive collection of Native American and pioneer artifacts. Local historic landmarks include the 1839 Old Courthouse Museum, and the Pettigrew Home and Museum, former residence of South Dakota's first senator. The city's pioneer heritage is also celebrated in the Spirit of the West Festival, which offers three days of re-enactments, cowboy competitions, vendors, and musical entertainment.

Parents and kids alike will have a great time at the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science, which offers six galleries of fine art in the Visual Arts Center; and outstanding music, dance, and theater presentations in the Performing Arts Center. The Washington Pavilion also contains the Science Center, where children can explore interactive exhibits on biology, science, and space; and the CineDome, which plays entertaining and educational films on a 60-foot-high (18-meter-high) screen. Other family attractions include the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum and the Wild Water West Waterpark.

Natural attractions in the area include the Lake Alvin Recreation Area, which offers excellent boating, fishing, and beach facilities. The Big Sioux River is a great site for canoeing, and the spectacular Sioux Falls from which the city takes its name is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.

Historic, scenic, and vibrant, Sioux Falls is a great place to live, work, and grow!
