South Haven, Michigan, is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. It is located 38 miles (61 kilometers) northwest of Kalamazoo, 57 miles (92 kilometers) southwest of Grand Rapids, and 101 miles (163 kilometers) southwest of Lansing. It is part of Van Buren County, and is home to 5,021 residents. Its lakeside setting means boating, fishing, swimming, waterskiing, scenic cruises, and a host of other activities are readily available. South Beach Park is a popular lakeside destination, and features a swimming beach, a skateboard park, a playground, and other amenities. Van Buren State Park stretches for 400 acres (162 hectares) along the shoreline, and is a great destination for outdoor recreation. On land, the 34-mile (55-kilometer) Kal-Haven Trail connects South Haven to Kalamazoo. This multipurpose trail is perfect for hiking and biking during the summer, and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling during the winter. Winter sports enthusiasts can also enjoy skating on the South Haven Ice Rink, or downhill skiing at the Timber Ridge Ski Area in Gobles and the Bittersweet Ski Area in Otsego. For a dose of local history, visit the Historical Association of South Haven or the Michigan Maritime Museum. The famous horticulturalist Liberty Hyde Bailey was a South Haven native, and his birthplace has been transformed into a museum that includes the Bailey family's historic home, library, gardens, and a wildflower trail. The work of local and regional talents is on display at the South Haven Center for the Arts and in the city's many galleries. Our Town Players is the local community theater group, and offers quality productions for both adults and children. Eagle Street Theatre stages performances throughout the year, and also offers drama, music, and dance classes for all ages. Want the freshest produce for your table? Then head to the South Haven Farmers' Market, or organize a family outing to pick your own fruits and vegetables from local orchards and farms. Residents await the blueberry harvest with special anticipation, and the National Blueberry Festival in August features an exciting cook-off and a busy schedule of family-friendly activities.
