Spokane, Washington

The city of Spokane lies 22 miles (35 kilometers) west of the Idaho border on the banks of the Spokane River in northeastern Washington.

Originally a trading post for the North West and Pacific Fur Companies, the city boomed after the construction of the Northern Pacific rail line in the 1880s.

The famous American crooner Bing Crosby grew up in Spokane, so it isn't all that surprising that the city has a lively arts community. Spokane is home to the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture, with permanent and visiting exhibits ranging from Native American art to the work of the French Impressionists. And Spokane also has its own symphony orchestra, jazz orchestra, and opera company to boot!

Baseball and hockey fans will be kept entertained in Spokane. The city's Avista Stadium is home to the Spokane Indians Baseball, 2003 Northwest League Champions in Minor League Baseball. And the Spokane Chiefs Hockey of the Western Hockey League play out of Spokane Arena.

The region around Spokane is known for its blue skies and glistening rivers and lakes. There are a number of state parks are nearby to get out and enjoy the scenery. Mount Spokane State Park offers 13,919 acres (5,632 hectares) of camping, hiking trails, and picnic areas, all nestled in the Selkirk Mountains. Camping is also available at Riverside State Park.

And not to be forgotten is the city's own Riverfront Park, site of the 1974 World's Fair. Located in the heart of downtown Spokane, park attractions include rides, an IMAX theater, and the new Gondola SkyRide, which offers a bird's-eye view of the city.
