Springfield, Missouri

Springfield is located in southwestern Missouri, about 180 miles (290 kilometers) northeast of Tulsa and 217 miles (349 kilometers) southwest of St. Louis. The city is found in the beautiful Ozarks region, and it is the county seat of Greene County. Springfield is the third largest city in Missouri, and home to 151,580 residents.

Springfield has had an exciting past and offers many historical sites and attractions. Wilson's Creek National Battlefield is a must-see for any visitor or history buff. On August 10, 1861, this became the site of the first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River. Visitors have access to guided tours, historic weapons firing demonstrations, and an excellent collection of Civil War artifacts found at the Sweeny Museum. Other Springfield attractions include the History Museum for Springfield-Greene County, the Air and Military Museum of the Ozarks, and the Railroad Historical Museum of Springfield Missouri. For a change of pace, visit the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame to learn more about the famous athletes of the past, or enjoy the 8,500 art objects on display at the Springfield Art Museum.

Springfield is home to many wonderful family attractions, including Fantastic Caverns, the only cave in North America large enough to drive through. Kids will also love visiting Exotic Animal Paradise, the Wonders of Wildlife Zooquarium, and the Dickerson Park Zoo. For some hands-on fun, try the Discovery Center, which offers fantastic interactive exhibits on science and technology.

One of Springfield's best-loved outdoor destinations is Nathanael Greene Park, which offers many scenic hiking paths, and is home to the Japanese Stroll Garden. Built in honor of Springfield's sister city Isesaki, this beautifully landscaped garden features a moon bridge, pagoda, and teahouse. Looking to get in touch with nature? Springfield is located in the Ozarks, a region of spectacular natural beauty. The mountains, forests, and rivers of the Ozarks offer fantastic opportunities for fishing, camping, canoeing, and other outdoor adventures. With more than 5,000 mapped caves in Missouri, it's no surprise that spelunking is another popular activity. The natural areas closest to Springfield are the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, which offers informative exhibits and great hiking, and the Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area, which offers outstanding nature-viewing, horseback riding, hunting, and other recreational opportunities.

With all that it has to offer, it's easy to see why Springfield is the "Queen City of the Ozarks!"
