Springfield, Oregon

 

The city of Springfield is located in west central Oregon, between the McKenzie and Willamette rivers and just four miles (six kilometers) east of Eugene. Springfield is part of Lane County, and is home to 52,864 people.

The Springfield Museum is located in the historic 1911 Oregon Power Company Transformer Station. The museum has displays on Springfield's early mill town days, fine arts and crafts, and also features rotating exhibits. Be sure to stroll through the Washburne Historic District and downtown Springfield, which boasts antique stores, specialty shops, funky cafés, and colorful murals. The Minds in Motion Discovery and Fun Center is part children's museum and part entertainment center, and features a wealth of hands-on activities for kids aged two to 12. Art enthusiasts of all ages can sign up for classes at the Emerald Art Center, or admire the works on display at their monthly exhibits and the annual National Juried Fine Arts Exhibition. The Richard E. Wildish Community Theater is Springfield's main performing arts venue, and offers everything from plays, dramas, and concerts to debates, festivals, and community events.

The Willamalane Parks and Recreation District offers an amazing range of activities for residents of all ages. Facilities include a waterpark, recreation center, and 38 city parks. The 32nd Street Community Sports Park can be used for everything from football to wall-climbing, Island Park offers boating and fishing on the Willamette River, and Ruff Park is home to a beautiful magnolia arboretum. The 1892 Dorris Ranch is Oregon's oldest working hazelnut farm, and is now a living history farm with 258 acres (104 hectares) to be explored. On the weekend, pack your camping gear and head for locations like the Willamette National Forest, which encompasses 1.7 million acres (687,965 hectares) of mountains, canyons, woods, and cascading streams, or the Siuslaw National Forest, which covers 630,000 acres (254,952 hectares) along the coast.
