The town of St. Anthony is located at the tip of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula, 468 kilometers (291 miles) northeast of Corner Brook. The population of St. Anthony is 2,730. Set against a backdrop of rugged coastlines and pounding surf, St. Anthony is a place of spectacular natural beauty. Nearby Fishing Point Park is a veritable paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, and gives you the chance to spot whales and dolphins in the North Atlantic Ocean, polar bears and caribou on land, and bald eagles and other birds in the air. The park also offers miles of coastal hiking trails and occasional glimpses of passing icebergs. After a day of sigh-seeing, you can pick up a souvenir at the Fishing Point Emporium, then enjoy a unique dining experience at the Lightkeeper's Seafood Restaurant or Leifsburdir. A replica of Viking Leif Erickson's 1,000-year-old home, Leifsburdir is the "only sod-covered restaurant in North America," and offers Viking Feast dinner theaters and other family entertainment. Want to see some real Viking dwellings? Drive out to the L'Anse aux Meadows Historical Site, which has been inhabited by various groups for five thousand years and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The remains of a 1,000 A.D. Viking camp were discovered in 1960, and is believed to be the oldest European settlement in North America. Today, reconstructed versions of three Norse buildings are the site's chief attraction. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, spectacular Gros Morne National Park, is a further drive away (approximately 322 kilometers, or 200 miles, southwest), but well worth several visits! Ready for a dose of local history? Then head to Grenfell Historical Properties. Dr. Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (1865–1940) devoted much of his life to helping the fishermen of Newfoundland and Labrador, and established local hospitals, schools, and orphanages. You can learn about Grenfell's life at the Interpretation Centre, tour the house where Grenfell and his family once lived, and walk to the hill where they are buried. The Rotunda contains beautiful murals that depict the history and culture of the region, and an onsite handcrafts store offers unique and high quality gifts. In addition to preserving the past, Grenfell Historical Properties also hosts music festivals and other community events. Beautiful, historic, and untamed – that's St. Anthony, Newfoundland!
