St. John's is located on the eastern shore of Newfoundland and is the most easterly point in North America. There is the East Coast Trail, 400 kilometers (248 miles) of winding coastline offering views of headlands, sea stacks, fjords, and a geyser called the Spout; the Grand Concourse Walking Trail, 100 kilometers (62 miles) of boardwalk through a series of lakes, ponds, and rivers; and the Newfoundland T'Railway, where you can hike, cycle, snowmobile, and cross-country ski. If you like nature, but aren't into walking, there is the Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden, or North America's only public Fluvarium, where you can catch a glimpse of underwater river life.

Being one of the oldest cities in North America, St. John's is steeped in history. See for yourself how far technology has progressed, and make a cell phone call at Signal Hill National Historic Site. This is where Guglielmo Marconi received his first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901. Or be the first to catch a glimpse of the dawning sun at the Cape Spear National Historic Site, which is North America's most eastern point.
