Most major cities have one striking structure that makes its skyline unique and intriguing and St. Louis is no exception. The Gateway Arch, which is the largest manmade monument in North America, stands 630 feet (192 meters) above the banks of the Mississippi River. Taking a ride to the top is the best way to see the city.

Two famous transit routes run through St. Louis: the Mississippi River and Route 66. The Mississippi brings a bit of Southern charm and romance to St. Louis. You can take a paddlewheel boat cruise or sit in one of the many riverfront cafés or restaurants and watch the world go by. On the opposite end, Route 66 – which stretches from Chicago to Los Angeles and is also known as the Mother Road and the Main Street of America – brings kitsch and legend as it winds its way through St. Louis. The city even has a park dedicated to it. Since St. Louis is a four-season city that experiences a perfect mix of mild summers and warm winters, you can visit the park – and many others – all year, and you don't have to worry about snow shoveling or heat warnings.

There are lots of interesting aspects to this semi-Southern city with 348,189 residents. St. Louis has French, Spanish, and African American influences (it was once own by both France and Spain and was part of the Louisiana Purchase). St. Louis is also part of America's musical corridor along with New Orleans and Memphis, which gives the city a lot of soul. Jazz, blues, ragtime, and rock and roll still reign today, contributing to an exciting nightlife. Visit Blueberry Hill (within the area known as The Loop) for cool music, cafés, restaurants, and atmosphere. If you're into sports, St. Louis has some great teams that the locals are very proud of: MLB's Cardinals, the NFL's Rams, and the NHL's Blues.

St. Louis gained fame in 1803 because it was the starting point for Lewis & Clarke's expedition to open up the west. At that time it was an area on the edge of the unknown – it was the frontier to a new world and thousands of people relocated there. St. Louis maintains some of that excitement to this day, and you can be part of it.
