St. Marys, West Virginia

St. Marys is nestled along the Ohio River in West Virginia's Pleasants County. The community's founder, Alexander H. Creel, named St. Marys in 1849. According to legend, an image of the Virgin Mary appeared to Creel while he traveled down the Ohio River. At the point in the river where he experienced his vision, he later established the town.

Children in St. Marys can experience some of the history of the area simply by going to school – St. Marys Elementary is the oldest school building in continuous use in the entire state of West Virginia!

With a population of 2,017, St. Marys boasts quaint small-town living, while being within 27 miles (43.5 kilometers) of Parkersburg and its city-style amenities and entertainment, such as the River Cities Symphony Orchestra. (And film buffs take note: Parkersburg features prominently in Steven Soderbergh's 2005 film Bubble!). Or head over to Williamstown, 18 miles (28 kilometers) west, to do some shopping at Fenton Art Glass, which has been in operation since 1905, and is known worldwide for its ornate blown glass.

And St. Marys has plenty of opportunities for those who love the outdoors. Anglers can participate in the West Virginia Bass Festival. Meanwhile North Bend State Park is a short 26 miles (42 kilometers) south and Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park is only about 27 miles (43.5 kilometers) southwest.
