Staten Island, New York

The borough of Staten Island is perhaps best known for its iconic ferry. The borough is located at the entrance to New York harbor, on the west side of the Narrows which separate it from Long Island.

Staten Island's history dates back to the 17th century, when Dutch settlers attempted to establish a permanent trading settlement. Today's Staten Island is a residential and commercial center that offers easy access to both Manhattan and to Brooklyn (via the Verrazano Narrows Bridge). It is the least populated borough in New York.

Staten Island is home to a number of historic sites and museums, such as the Alice Austen House and the Garibaldi Meucci Museum. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center is a designated National Historic Landmark district, and showcases some of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. Historic Richmond Town offers a hands-on introduction the broader region's history. Borough festivals include the Richmond County Fair, which is held every September.

Staten Island's extensive parkland is a point of pride for residents, and includes a greenbelt, covering an area of about 2,800 acres (1,133 hectares), and including numerous woodland trails. Also on Staten Island are the Mount Loretto State Preserve and the Clay Pit Ponds State Park Preserve. The island's South Beach is a summertime destination for many New Yorkers, and includes a 7,500-foot-long (2,286-meter-long) boardwalk – the fourth longest in the world!
