Located 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of downtown Atlanta, Stockbridge is a peaceful getaway from the big city. Due to its moderate climate and its affordable housing, the city has experienced a population boom over the past few years. From 1990 to 2000, the population increased from 3,359 to 9,853, an increase of 193%. While many of the area's local attractions are found in Atlanta, Stockbridge does have some of its own to boast about. It is home to a beautiful wildlife sanctuary, Panola Mountain State Park; a NASCAR track; the Atlanta Festival Ballet, a dance company that puts on two full-length productions each year; and the Southern Crescent Symphony, a well-known community orchestra.
