Summit, New Jersey

The City of Summit is located in northeastern New Jersey, 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of Newark and 24 miles (39 kilometers) west of New York City. It is part of Union County, and home to 21,131 people.

For a crash course in local history, pay a visit to the Summit Historical Society. The society is housed in the c. 1741 Carter House, which is believed to be the oldest surviving building in Summit. Visitors can enjoy a complete tour of the home, complete with Victorian-era furniture and items. Another highlight of the city is Summit's historic and vibrant downtown. Along with great shops and restaurants, you'll also find many special events such as regular farmer's markets and Concerts on the Green.

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey is located within walking distance of downtown, and offers a variety of fine arts educational programs. Here you can pick up a paintbrush and unleash your creativity, or admire the many works that are on display in the Center's galleries. The Summit Playhouse is another local cultural treasure, and mounts outstanding dramas, musicals, and children's theater productions.

Summit is situated in the Watchung Mountains, and offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Popular local parks include Hidden Valley, Passaic River, and Briant Park. Want a dose of wilderness without straying too far from the city? Then head to the Watchung Reservation, where you can enjoy scenic hikes in the summer, and cross-country skiing or ice skating in the winter. To learn more about the local flora, head to the Reeves-Reed Arboretum. Located on a former country estate, the arboretum provides a home for diverse native plants and bird species, and also offers a variety of educational programs.
