The North Carolina town of Sylva is a great place to raise a family. Though it is the county seat of Jackson County, with a population under 3,000, it still preserves all of the intimate charm of a small town. Sylva is home to Southwestern Community College and is only seven miles (11 kilometers) north of Western Carolina University, which is located in the community of Cullowhee.

Sylva's commitment to children is evident in its local park. The Charles E. Poteet Park was designed by local kids, and best of all it's right beside the local pool – fun for the whole family!

Those who yearn for the great outdoors will be spellbound by the Pinnacle Park. With more than 1,000 acres (405 hectares) of wilderness adorned with waterfalls, streams, and challenging trails – and heights peaking at 5,008 feet (1,526 meters) – the park quite literally may leave you breathless. And if the trails and height won't, the great panoramic views of Sylva and its surrounding area will.

After you've mastered the local heights, you can try your luck in the Great Smoky Mountains. Located only 30 minutes away from Sylva, Great Smoky Mountains National Park boasts a rich plant and animal life, endless forests, and mountains that scrape the heavens at 6,642 feet (2,024 meters).

After any type of outdoor fun, the whole family can unwind at the Soul Infusion Tea House & Bistro. Aside from serving delicious but healthy eats, the bistro also features live musical acts which – you guessed it – are open to people of all ages.

When the little ones are finally tucked away, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll down the quaint but bustling Main Street.
