The Pas, Manitoba

For a town of 5,795 people, The Pas is surprisingly multicultural. Forty-eight different ethnic groups call the town home, including people from French, Ukrainian and Cree backgrounds. Actually, it's no surprise that so many different people choose to live in The Pas. With a solid economy and pleasant lifestyle, it is the place to be in northern Manitoba.

The town, located 600 kilometres (372 miles) northwest of Winnipeg, is a northern oasis. With countless lakes and rivers, it has some of the best canoeing in Manitoba. The Grass River canoe route is the best place for newcomers to start their canoe challenge. The area is a wilderness paradise, where you'll spot an array of waterfowl under the shade of tall spruce, jack pine, and aspen trees. More experienced canoeists can then graduate to the Sturgeon-Weir River canoe route. Its rapids offer a real challenge for those who are skilled with a paddle.

And the fishing in The Pas area is as good as it gets. Walleye, whitefish, northern pike, tulibee, and mullet are just some of the breeds to be found. A short trip to the Clearwater Lake area leads to the Jackfish Creek Fishway. In early spring, visitors marvel as the northern pike and white suckers battle the current to reach their spawning grounds.

The winter also offers exciting recreation. Try out your new snowshoes for the first time or blaze the trails on your snowmobile. In February, locals test their northern hardiness at the Northern Manitoba Trapper's Festival. Try your hand at trap setting, pole climbing, or flour packing and see if you can be crowned King Trapper. There's also the exciting World Championship Dog Race.

Besides outdoor fun, daily life in The Pas is a pleasure. High-paying jobs in forestry, healthcare, education, and government services have left the area with an average income higher than the provincial average. As a major center for the towns and villages to the north, the region also has excellent services. The Otineka Mall is the first shopping center owned and operated by aboriginal peoples in Canada while an aboriginal gaming casino is located just outside the town.
