Three Hills, Alberta

Three Hills is the largest commercial community in Kneehill County, and is located 128 kilometers (80 miles) northeast of Calgary, and 113 kilometers (70 miles) southeast of Red Deer.

Incorporated in 1929, Three Hills – which takes its name from three prominent hills to the north of the town – was once a market and service center for a large wheat growing area. Today, while agriculture is still important, the oil and gas industries have taken on a larger role in the local economy. And so too has the proximity of Three Hills to the Prairie Bible Institute, whose enrollment exceeds 1,000.

Three Hills offers residents a full range of community services. The town has schooling from kindergarten through to high school, and the recreational facilities include an aquatic center, a curling rink, and an arena.

Local attractions include the Bleriott Ferry, one of the last remaining cable ferries in Alberta (the ferry spans the Red Deer River), and the Trochu Arboretum and Gardens, which contains over 100 different species of trees and shrubs. Three Hills is located along Alberta's historic Boomtown Trail, and for those with a sweet tooth, Golden Acres Honey is also located nearby.

In addition to the recreational activities available in town itself, the broader region around Three Hills also has a lot to offer. Keiver's Lake, located 15 kilometers (9 miles) west, is great for swimming and camping. And Three Hills also has its own golf course.
