Timmins, Ontario

Noah and Henry Timmins were born in the small town of Mattawa, Ontario. Following a successful mining operation in Cobalt, the two brothers became involved with a small exploration project at Porcupine Camp in Northern Ontario. Purchasing land claims from a variety of different stakeholders, the two brothers quickly became major players in a town that would one day bare their name.

With an initial investment of only one million dollars, mining operations for the Timmins brothers at Porcupine Camp would eventually produce 19.3 million ounces of gold with dividends of more than $564 million.

Located approximately 700 kilometers (434 miles) north of Toronto and 120 kilometers (74 miles) west of the Quebec border, Timmins has become known as the city with a heart of gold. Since its inception, mining in the area has grown to embrace a variety of different minerals including copper, nickel and zinc. Other major industries include forestry and silviculture (Lafleur Gardens of Timmins is the second largest company of its kind in Ontario).

Despite being Canada's largest city in terms of area (3,210 square kilometers/1,239 square miles), Timmins maintains a small town atmosphere with a population of approximately 43,686. Being close to the Quebec border, school boards offer programs to students in both French and English.

Not for the average city dweller, Timmins presents numerous opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor pursuits. Large quantities of snow and cold temperatures in the winter months make for excellent skiing, skating, and snowmobiling.

Timmins is also well known as the birthplace of numerous NHL stars (including Bill Barilko and Steve Sullivan), as well as being the "once home" of singer Shania Twain.
