Tennessee

Tennessee, the Volunteer State, covers 42,146 square miles (109,158 square kilometers) and received its nickname thanks to heroic volunteer fighters from Tennessee, and their efforts during the War of 1812.

Famous Tennesseans include Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Minnie Pearl, Cybil Shepherd, Tina Turner, Davy Crockett, and Dinah Shore. Three presidents also hailed from Tennessee, along with many other well-known government officials. Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley, also stands in the southwestern part of the state.

The state is the home of country music: Memphis, Knoxville, Nashville, and Chattanooga promote country worldwide. Bristol is known as the birthplace of country music, and, broadcasting since 1925, Nashville's Grand Ole Opry is the longest continuously running live radio program in the world.

Great supporters of the military, Tennessee sent more National Guard soldiers to the Gulf War than any other state. On the Courthouse lawn in Greenville, there is also a monument that honors both the Union and Confederate armies – the only one to do so in America.

Those inspired by nature will head for the hills – the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the US, and the conifer forests in the higher elevations are similar to those found in Canada. The Ocoee River is host to some of the nation's best white water rafting, and was the site for the 1996 Olympic canoe/kayak competition.

The name Tennessee came from the Yuchi word for The Meeting Place. If you are looking to join in the music, meet new friends, or to live peacefully in the mountains, Tennessee is the place you have been looking for.
