Tomah, Wisconsin

 

The city of Tomah is located in southwestern Wisconsin, 12 miles (19 kilometers) east of the Fort McCoy Military Reservation, 44 miles (71 kilometers) northeast of La Crosse, and 97 miles (156 kilometers) northwest of Madison. It is part of Monroe County, and is home to 8,419 people.

The Tomah Historical Society Museum offers a great overview of local history, with displays on the railroad, agricultural, and lumber industries. Visitors can also learn about native Frank King, creator of the Gasoline Alley comic strip. The Little Red Schoolhouse is another charming attraction, and let's you see how students were taught in times gone by. Want to take a piece of the past home with you? Check out the antique stores in Historic Downtown Tomah or shop for something different at Burnstad's European Village.

Looking for some excitement? Head to the Tomah Recreation Park for the Super National Tractor Pull, Tomah Youth Hockey Association Tournaments, and a variety of other events. You can also get your adrenaline flowing at the Whitetail Crossing Casino, which has nearly 100 slot machines and other games.

For outdoor buffs, Tomah offers two 18-hole golf courses, 10 beautiful parks, and 200 acres (81 hectares) of green spaces. Lake Tomah is an ideal spot for fishing, boating, and waterskiing, and also boasts two lakeside parks. Outside of the city, enjoy a ride along the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail or spend the day bird-watching at the Necedah Wildlife Refuge. During the winter, take advantage of Monroe County's numerous snowmobile trails or take to the slopes at the Whitetail Ridge Ski Area.

Need some daytrip ideas? Join a tour of the Fort McCoy Military Reservation to see World War II-era buildings, helicopters and howitzers, and a variety of military memorabilia. You'll find Amish communities to the south and west of Tomah, along with homemade foods, crafts, and furnishings. Tomah is situated in Wisconsin's Cranberry Country, a region that encompasses 2,500 acres (1,012 hectares) of cranberry bogs and marshes. The Cranberry Discovery Center in Warrens covers 150 years of berry-growing history, and also offers tasty recipes for you to take home.
