Topeka, Kansas

Topeka is the state capital of Kansas, and the county seat of Shawnee County. The city is found in the northeastern part of the Kansas, 61 miles (98 kilometers) west of Kansas City, and 144 miles (232 kilometers) northeast of Wichita. Topeka is home to 122,377 residents, making it the fourth largest city in the state.

The state capitol is full of historic attractions, and the best place to start is the Capitol Building. Construction began in 1866, and took 37 years to complete. Highlights of the Capitol Building tour include the chambers of the House of Representatives and the Senate, magnificent murals by John Steuart Curry, and the building's two majestic domes.

To learn more about the region's heritage, head to the Kansas Museum of History, the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, or the Combat Air Museum. But remember, history isn't just confined to the indoors! Historic Ward-Meade Park features a Victorian mansion and a pioneer village, as well as beautiful botanical gardens. Also be sure to visit the Santa Fe National Historic Trail. During the 19th century, this was the major highway that connected Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico. While traveling along the same trail once used by fur traders, adventurers, stagecoach riders, and gold seekers, you'll be able to see a number of historic sites.

Gage Park is one of the largest parks in the city, and home to many family attractions. Here you can to see 400 animals from around the world at the Topeka Zoo, admire hundreds of flowers in the Reinisch Rose Garden, or enjoy a peaceful moment by the reflecting pool in the Doran Rock Garden. Gage Park is also home to the Helen Hocker Center for the Performing Arts, which offers a variety of performances and classes year-round. Looking for more cultural events? Both the Topeka Performing Arts Center and the Topeka Civic Theatre host a variety of shows including music, comedy, theater, and much more!
