Towson, Maryland

The city of Towson is located in northern Maryland, just 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Baltimore. It is the county seat of Baltimore County, and home to 51,793 residents.

The city was named after early settlers Thomas and William Towson, who moved to Maryland in 1752. In 1768, Thomas' son Ezekiel built a tavern at the crossroads of York and Joppa, and the village of "Towsontown" began to develop around the tavern. In 1854, Towson became the county seat of Baltimore County, and grew rapidly during the following years. Historic landmarks in the area include the Old Courthouse, and the Hampton National Historic Site. Upon its completion in 1790, Hampton was the largest house in the US, and the site preserves this beautiful Georgian mansion, along with the formal gardens and shade trees in its vast estate grounds. For more local history, stop by the Baltimore County Historical Society, which offers a research library, along with house and farm museums that recreate daily life in bygone times.

In addition to historic delights, Towson also offers many modern amenities. The Towson Town Center includes more than 200 stores, and the city's downtown core features unique shops, restaurants, pubs, and the Recher Theater, Maryland's premier concert venue. For some outdoor adventure, head to the Loch Raven Reservoir. This immense reservoir is the source of Baltimore City and Baltimore County's drinking water.
