Set on the Columbia River in southern BC, Trail was originally established to service the gold and copper mines of nearby Rossland – and, as a result, is the home of the world's largest lead and zinc smelter. Today this city of 7,575, which is located in the Selkirk and Monashee mountain ranges, is better known for its outdoor activities: fishing, golfing, hiking, and downhill skiing. And despite its remote location, Trail is served by two airports: the Castlegar Airport (a 30-minute drive to the north) and the Columbia Gardens Airport to the south, which is used by local pilots and the BC Ambulance Service. Full US airline service is also available from Washington's Spokane International Airport, located 195 kilometers (121 miles) south of Trail. And though downtown trail now has modern cafés and restaurants, from the architecture to the local productions of Gold Fever Follies and the dance performances of the Boomtown Garter Girls, there's still some gold rush nostalgia in the air.
