Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa is located in northeastern Oklahoma, 108 miles (174 kilometers) northeast of Oklahoma City. It is the county seat of Tulsa County and, with a population of 393,049, the second-largest city in the state.

Under the Creek Council Oak Tree, the city first began life as Tulsee Town in 1836. This was the place where the Lochapoka Creek Indians lit a ceremonial fire using live coals carried all the way from their homeland in Alabama. It was also the site of Tulsa's first town hall, first conference room, first church, and first law court. In 1901, oil was discovered, causing the community's population to increase tenfold over the next 20 years, and helped to make Tulsa the bustling city it is today. Throughout it all, the oak tree has continued to grow and flourish, and visitors can still see it today at the intersection of 18th and Cheyenne streets.

Tulsa is home to several renowned art galleries and museums. The Gilcrease Museum houses the largest collection of American Western art in the world, and has more than 10,000 artworks in its exhibits. The Philbrook Museum of Art is one of the top 50 art museums in the nation. Housed in a beautiful Italian Renaissance villa surrounded by lovely gardens, Philbrook complements its extensive international art collection with a bit of history and natural beauty. Still want more? The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art features a notable Holocaust collection, one of the best collections of Judaica in the Southwest, and many other priceless objects. For contemporary and locally produced pieces, visit the Alexandre Hogue Gallery of Art, located on the University of Tulsa campus.

Looking for some family fun? Head to the Tulsa Zoo and Living Museum to see 1,500 animals ranging from aldabra tortoises to zebras, or the Oklahoma Aquarium to see hundreds of exciting marine and aquatic creatures. Another kid-friendly attraction is Oral Roberts University's Elsing Museum, which houses an amazing collection of gems and minerals, along with art and Asian artifacts.

Looking to escape to the great outdoors? The Tulsa Garden Center offers many beautiful gardens, along with an arboretum, conservatory, and a 21-bedroom mansion that's open for tours. The 40-acre (16-hectare) Woodward Park also features a variety of flowers and herbs, along with hiking and biking trails. Whether you're looking for some intense exercise or just a quiet picnic, River Parks is the place to go. Located along the banks of the Arkansas River, the park is a popular site for biking, in-line skating, and rowing, and also hosts many special events. For golf enthusiasts, Tulsa has 16 public courses that will keep your swing in top form.

On the performing arts front, the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame hosts outstanding jazz, blues, and gospel performances, and also works to preserve the history of these music forms. The Brady Theater is the city's premier entertainment center, and hosts symphonic and popular music events, dance, musicals, and a variety of other performing art presentations. The Tulsa Opera and Tulsa Spotlight Theatre provide great entertainment throughout the year, while the Discoveryland Amphitheater mounts productions of the musical Oklahoma! each summer.

Historic, artistic, and dynamic, Tulsa is truly a special place to be!
