Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Tuscaloosa is located in western Alabama, 57 miles (92 kilometers) southwest of Birmingham and 134 miles (216 kilometers) northwest of Montgomery. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County, and home to 77,906 residents.

Tuscaloosa took its name from a legendary Indian chief, whose name in Choctaw means "black warrior." The city served as the state capital from 1825 to 1846, and visitors can still see the remains of the old capitol building at Capitol Park. The park also includes the 1827 Old Tavern Museum and the McGuire-Strickland house – the oldest surviving wood frame structure in the city. Other historic sites include the Battle-Friedman House and a number of fine antebellum homes.

Local museums include the Alabama Museum of Natural History, which features exhibits on history, geology, minerology, and paleontology. Just for kids, there's the Children's Hands-On Museum, where youngsters can explore a variety of fascinating exhibits ranging from a Choctaw Indian village to a traditional Japanese home. Another attraction is the Paul W. Bryant Museum, which commemorates the achievements of local college football coach Paul William "Bear" Bryant. Today, college football games and other University of Alabama athletic events continue to be some of the most-anticipated events of the year.

Looking for some entertainment? Try a play by the Theatre Tuscaloosa, the University of Alabama Department of Theatre and Dance, or the Tuscaloosa Children's Theatre. Popular performing arts venues include the historic Bama Theatre and Shelton State Community College's Fine Arts Centre. The beautiful Lake Lurleen State Park is a popular site for fishing and boating, and also offers playgrounds and camp facilities. To learn more about the native flora, visit the University of Alabama Arboretum, which houses an extensive collection of trees, native wildflowers, and three greenhouses of exotic plants. You're also only a short drive from Talladega National Forest.
