Located only 100 miles (160 kilometers) from Denver, with a permanent population of about 4,531 and another 5,000 part-time residents who own vacation properties in the area, Vail is a surprisingly busy place. People can't get enough of the town's beautiful surroundings, so they keep on coming! In the summer, Vail is a warm, alpine paradise with fresh, mountain air. In winter, it's all about the slopes. And, year-round, there is a friendly feeling about this quaint town.

Golf and skiing have attracted many celebrities and influential people to the area, including the former president Gerald R. Ford and his wife, Betty, who even has a local attraction named after her: The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, which are the highest botanical gardens in the world.

And although Vail occupies an area of only 4.5 square miles (11.7 square kilometers), the 1,100 acres (445 hectares) of town-owned land, the 350,000 acres (141,637 hectares) of national forest, and the 5,289 acres (2,140 hectares) of ski-country in the surrounding area are enough to take your breath away! And it's easy to see all of it – the Town of Vail provides free year-round transit. The system is thought to be the largest free transit system in the country.
