Valdese, North Carolina

Valdese, North Carolina, is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, eight miles (13 kilometers) east of Morganton, 16 miles (26 kilometers) west of Hickory, and 63 miles (101 kilometers) northwest of Charlotte. It is part of Burke County, and is home to 4,485 people.

The community was founded by a religious group called the Waldenses, who emigrated from Italy to the US in 1839 in order to escape persecution. Want to learn more about local history? The Waldensian Heritage Museum is an excellent place to start. Operated by the Waldensian Presbyterian Church, the museum contains thousands of household items, tools, books, and photos that tell the story of Valdese's early settlers. The Trail of Faith is another top attraction, and features 15 recreated buildings and monuments that played an important part during the Waldenses' journey from Europe to Valdese. The town's heritage is also celebrated during the annual Founder's Festival, the Waldensian Festival, and through the play "From This Day Forward," which is performed by the Old Colony Players each summer.

In addition to historic attractions, Valdese also offers many recreational opportunities for the whole family. Facilities include a swimming pool, and a playground and sports fields at the Children's Park. The Village Park boasts a giant mural that depicts the town's history, including 51 hidden objects that invite you to take a closer look. The Waldensian Winery is located just outside of town, and offers tasting sessions, tours, and decades of winemaking expertise.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love exploring Burke's County's many natural attractions, including the Blue Ridge Parkway, the South Mountain State Park, Lake James, and the Pisgah National Forest.
