Vancouver, Washington

Named after the British captain and explorer George Vancouver, Vancouver, Washington is located on the north bank of the Columbia River, across the I-5 bridge from Portland, Oregon. With a population of 143,560 and rapidly expanding, Vancouver may soon become the second-largest city in Washington state. The city is often thought of as divided into East and West Vancouver, with the NE Andreson Road marking the boundary between the two areas. West Vancouver contains downtown Vancouver and most of the historical landmarks, while East Vancouver is transitioning from rural farmland to residential and commercial developments.

Vancouver is a city with a long and rich history. For thousands of years, the area was home to Native Americans, and later it was the headquarters of the British Hudson's Bay Company, and thus the political, commercial, and cultural center of the Pacific Northwest. Today, visitors can step back in time with a trip to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, which offers tours of the fort, McLoughlin House, and interpreters dressed in period costumes bringing history to life. People can also explore the history of the region by visiting Clark County Historical Museum, and they can see 22 beautifully restored Victorian homes by visiting Officers Row, or view a collection of vintage airplanes at the Pearson Air Museum.

Modern-day attractions include the Water Resources Education Center, the Vancouver Farmer's Market which is open year-round, and the Vancouver Wine and Jazz Festival, which delights visitors with fine music, wine, and dining every year in late August.

Vancouver also has a vibrant arts scene. Local theater companies include Vancouver OnStage, the Magenta Theater Company, and the Old Slocum House Theatre Company. Classical music fans can enjoy concerts put on by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Bravo! Vancouver Concert Series.

For those who prefer to heed the call of the great outdoors, recreational opportunities abound. Vancouver has nearly 7,000 acres (2,833 hectares) of parkland and more than 44 miles (71 kilometers) of trails. Whether your passion is biking, mountain-climbing, or team sports, you're sure to find something to meet your needs through one of the programs offered by Vancouver Parks and Recreation.

Vancouver is also conveniently located near many spectacular natural attractions. Thirty minutes away lies the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and less than two hours of driving brings you to Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and Mount Hood. The Cascade Mountain Range rises to the east of Vancouver, while the Pacific Coast lies less than 90 miles (145 kilometers) west.

Whether your interest lies in history, culture, nature or all of the above, Vancouver, Washington is a great place to consider.
