Virginia Beach, Virginia

Thinking of sun and sand? Think of Virginia Beach! The city, which is the largest in the state of Virginia, is a part of a large metro area known as the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, or more officially, the "Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC Metropolitan Statistical Area." The city is located along Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, and is famous for its resorts and beaches.

The site of the landing of the Jamestown colonists occurred in 1607 in what is now the northern portion of the city, but the colonists didn't remain at the site. There is nonetheless plenty of history still to see today, such as the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, the Adam Thoroughgood House, and the Ferry Plantation House.

There is also a lot to do outdoors. First Landing State Park and False Cape State Park are right at residents' doorsteps. First Landing has opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and swimming, while False Cape, a mile-wide barrier spit located between Back Bay and the Atlantic, offers more rustic outdoor fun. False Cape has no vehicular access, and is entered by water or through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

And golfers, listen up: there are 11 local courses, which have been designed by world-leading course architects.

Kids of all ages will love local attractions like the Ocean Breeze Waterpark, the Virginia Beach Amusement Park, and the Virginia Marine Science Museum (with aquariums, habitats, trails, and IMAX movies). And the Virginia Zoo, home to nearly 400 animals, is right next door in Norfolk.

The city is also home to many fun events and festivals, such as the Neptune Festival (with events ranging from wine tasting to sandcastle building), the Boardwalk Art Show and Festival, the PANorama Caribbean Music Fest, Summer Shakes (the Hampton Roads Shakespeare Festival), and more.

Residents can also take in performances by local groups like the Virginia Beach Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Musical Theatre.

There's so much to enjoy in Virginia Beach, even beyond the beach!
