Virginia, Minnesota

Virginia is located in northeastern Minnesota, 63 miles (101 kilometers) northwest of Duluth. It is part of Saint Louis County, and is home to 9,157 residents. Virginia is one of the area's Quad Cities, the other three being Eveleth, Mt. Iron, and Gilbert.

The Heritage Museum is located in beautiful Olcott Park, and offers a fascinating look at the city's history. Highlights include a 1910 log cabin and exhibits on the logging era, the historic trolley line that once crossed the Iron Range, and a great collection of vintage photos and postcards. Leave yourself enough time to explore the rest of Olcott Park, which features a c. 1937 illuminated fountain and a greenhouse full of exotic flowers.

Virginia is part of northeastern Minnesota's Iron Range region and offers excellent year-round recreation. Fitness facilities include the Range Recreation Civic Center rink, swimming pools, and tennis, racquetball, and bocce ball courts. The 18-hole Virginia Municipal Golf Course is one of the finest in the state and you'll also have easy access to four other local courses. Winter or summer, you'll definitely want to make the 18-mile (29-kilometer) drive to the Giants Ridge Golf and Ski Resort. This resort features two outstanding golf courses, along with downhill slopes and cross-country trails that are used by Olympic athletes.

Surrounded by dense forests and picturesque lakes, Virginia is every outdoor enthusiast's dream! Popular pursuits include hunting and fishing, biking, canoeing, kayaking, and ATVing. The Laurentian Fitness Trail is an excellent route for joggers, while the Look-Out Mountain trail offers a rewarding hike in the summer and fantastic cross-country skiing in the winter. For a unique excursion, go scuba-diving in one of the lakes hidden in local caverns.

Tired out from your outdoor exertions? Then relax with a performance by the Virginia City Band, the Arrowhead Community Concert Association, or the Northern Lights Players. For visual arts buffs, there's the Little Gallery Art League and Arts on the Iron Range. Also be sure to check out the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, and the Ironworld Discovery Center in Chisholm, which offers a fascinating look at the area's mining and immigration history.
