Wayne, Michigan

Wayne is located in Wayne County, Michigan, 26 miles (42 kilometers) west of Detroit. The city is home to 19,051 residents, and an additional 11,000 people commute here daily for work. The Ford Motor Company has two plants in Wayne, and is the city's largest employer.

Major attractions include the Wayne Historical Museum, which is housed in the 1878 village hall. The museum has more than 100 exhibits, with displays on the Civil War, local industries, and artifacts from early schools, homes, and villages. Also be sure to visit Historic Fort Wayne. Built in 1845, Fort Wayne has never fired a shot in battle. The site served as an army base for 125 years, and has been an induction center for Michigan troops from the Civil War to the Vietnam War. Visitors will be able to see the 1845 Star Fort, 1848 limestone barracks buildings, a restored Commanding Officers House and Spanish American War Guardhouse, parade grounds, and a thousand-year-old Native American mound.

After a hard day's work, there are many ways to enjoy yourself in Wayne. The Community Center offers facilities for swimming, skating, hockey, and racquet sports, and the city also has several baseball and softball leagues. Wayne boasts 17 neighborhood playgrounds and parks, with several parks containing beautiful hiking trails. Attwood Park hosts an annual fireworks display, while Goudy Park is the site of the Wheelfest celebration, and a weekly concert series that runs from June to August. For the latest movies and plays, head to the State Wayne Theater. The theater is home to both adult and youth community theater groups, and attracts 7,000 audience members a year.
