Wheatland is located 71 miles (114 kilometers) north of the state capital, Cheyenne, in southeastern Wyoming. The city was incorporated in 1905, and became the county seat of Platte County a few years later. The city draws heavily on agriculture to drive the local economy, and offers its residents a range of community and social services, as well as numerous recreational amenities. Wheatland hosts the annual Platte County Fair and Rodeo, a showcase for local formers and city residents. It's also home to the Laramie Peak Museum, where the region's pioneer history can be explored. Outdoor recreation may well be the city's biggest draw, however, as Wheatland offers easy access to a range of locales and activities. Nearby Laramie River and Glendo Resevoir offer boating and great fishing, and Glendo State Park has miles of hiking trails and over 300 camping sites available. Laramie Peak, located in Medicine Bow National Forest has long been a popular destination for backpackers and climbers, and now it also attracts mountain bikers and cross-country skiers.
