Whitehorse, Yukon Territory

Since its settlement during the Klondike gold rush of the 1890s, the capital of Canada's Yukon Territory has grown from a small prospector's encampment to a northern economic center.

Visitors to Whitehorse are sometimes surprised to learn that more than 70% of the territory's 28,674 population live within the city limits. Beyond the immediate downtown core, Whitehorse actually encompasses more than 400 square kilometers (154 square miles) and includes communities such as Ibex Valley, Wolf Creek, Marsh Lake, Spruce Hill, and Mount Lorne. As such, Whitehorse is home to numerous government and business facilities, and residents from more remote areas travel to the city for medical service, entertainment, banking, and other services. However, Whitehorse maintains a small-town atmosphere with a strong community spirit, as witnessed by the widely attended local productions put on by the Yukon Arts Centre, Nakai Theatre, and the Frostbite Music Festival.

Surrounded by mountains in the sub-arctic region, conditions in the community include long, cold winters with aurora-filled nights followed by mild summer temperatures with extended daylight hours. For nature lovers, Whitehorse and the surrounding Yukon Territory offer incredible opportunities for exploration. Grizzly bears, moose, caribou, mountain goats, lynx, and deer roam the local forests. Arctic char, whitefish, salmon, grayling, and pike inhabit local waters. Canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and camping are always at your doorstep. But, though Whitehorse is remote, it is not detached from the rest of the world – the city is served by the famous Alaska Highway and the Whitehorse International Airport.

Affordable real estate, excellent schools, and access to the adventures of Canada's north make Whitehorse an excellent place to live.
