Wickenburg, Arizona

The town of Wickenburg is located in west central Arizona, 61 miles (98 kilometers) northwest of Phoenix. It is part of Maricopa County, and home to 5,082 people.

Despite its small size, Wickenburg offers a wealth of attractions. The town's past is reflected in its many heritage buildings and sites. Visit Frontier Street to see a variety of buildings dating back to the early 1900s; stop by the back of Town Hall to see an old 761 Santa Fe Steam Locomotive; and also be sure to see the Jail Tree, a 200-year-old mesquite tree that once served as the town jail. To get a taste of the area's mining past, visit the historic Vulture Mine, or Robson's Arizona Mining World, which features buildings such as an assay office, barber shop, and trading post, each filled with an array of artifacts and antique equipment. The mining world is also surrounded by trails that lead to an Indian campsite and a stagecoach stop.

Wickenburg is the perfect starting point for exploring the unique beauty of Arizona's desert landscape. One of the largest remaining Joshua tree stands in the state is located 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of town, and is a spectacular sight when it blooms each spring. Visitors can also hike to Vulture Peak and other area attractions, or visit the Hassayampa River. The Hassayampa River Preserve is home to a large number of birds, and gives wildlife watchers a chance to see great blue herons, white-faced ibises, and other rare species. The preserve also offers beautiful hiking trails through dense forests and lush riverbanks, along with a look at the historic Frederick Brill Ranch.

For some local arts and culture, visit the Desert Caballeros Western Museum to see a great collection of Native American and Western American art. On the performing arts front, the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts hosts a variety of music, dance, theater, and other events throughout the year.

With all that the town has to offer, Wickenburg is proof that good things come in small packages!
