Winchester is an affluent town of 20,810, located in Middlesex County, nine miles (14 kilometers) northwest of downtown Boston. European settlement began in the area in 1640, but Winchester was not incorporated until 1850. There are plenty of community events to keep residents busy, including concerts and movies on the Common in July and August, Town Day in June, and a holiday tree lighting event in early December. And when residents want to get back to nature, they only have to go to the edge of town: Winchester borders the 2,060-acre (834-hectare) Middlesex Fells Reservation, whose area includes rocky hills, meadows, oak and hickory forests, wetlands, and ponds, and whose trails can be enjoyed in all seasons.
