Wolfeboro, New Hampshire

The town of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, is situated on Lake Winnipesaukee, 38 miles (61 kilometers) northeast of Concord and 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Manchester. Wolfeboro is part of Carroll County, and is home to 2,979 people.

Wolfeboro is known as "America's oldest summer resort," thanks to its ideal location on Lake Winnipesaukee. Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in the state, with an area of 46,080 acres (18,647 hectares) and with 240 miles (386 kilometers) of shoreline. Woods and mountains surround the lake, and offer great opportunities for outdoor activities. Wolfeboro is also home to Wentworth State Beach, along Lake Wentworth. To the north lies the White Mountain National Forest, an enormous outdoor playground that offers numerous recreational opportunities.

The 1778 Clark House is the centerpiece of the Wolfeboro Historical Society's museum complex, and features authentic period furnishings in each room. The historical society also maintains the 1805 Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse and the Firehouse, with its antique firefighting equipment. The Wright Museum is devoted to America's role in World War II, and features enlightening exhibits about life on the front lines and the American home front. Finally, there's the New Hampshire Boat Museum, where you can admire a variety of antique boats that once travelled through local lakes and rivers.

The Nick is the gathering place for local sports teams, including youth baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. Younger kids can enjoy an afternoon on The Nick's playground, and the annual Nickfest offers a great day of activities and entertainment for kids and their families.

Despite its small size, Wolfeboro offers a year-round schedule of cultural events. The Great Waters Music Festival takes place on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, and offers a great lineup of artists all summer long. The Wolfeboro Friends of Music hosts concerts throughout the year, including jazz, classical, choral, chamber music, show tune renditions, and more. Wolfeboro is also home to the Village Players community theater, which puts on five annual productions ranging from dramas and mysteries to comedies and musicals.
