Wyandotte, Michigan

The city of Wyandotte is situated on the west bank of the Detroit River, just 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of Detroit. It is part of Wayne County, and home to 28,006 people. Wyandotte and about 20 other suburban cities and townships along the Detroit River are collectively referred to as "Downriver."

One of the city's best-known attractions is the Wyandotte Historical Museum. This beautiful 1896 Queen Anne mansion contains a fine collection of Victorian furniture and clothing, as well as informative exhibits on local history. The museum is also one of the activity hubs for the annual Wyandotte Heritage Days, a two-day festival that features living history demonstrations, music, exhibits, and a vintage boat race on the Detroit River.

Another major festival is the Wyandotte Street Art Fair in July, which attracts artists from all across the country and is the second-largest event of its kind in Michigan. For music lovers, there's the Bishop Park Concert Series and Gospel Fest each summer. And for men who love their cars, there's the Father's Day Show and Shine Classic Car Show.

Looking for some outdoor recreation? Wyandotte offers several lovely golf courses, beautiful waterfront parks, and opportunities for boating, fishing, and bird-watching on the Detroit River. Two ongoing conservation projects include the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, which protects 48 miles (77 kilometers) of shoreline along the Detroit River and Lake Erie, and the Downriver Linked Greenways Initiative, which aims to connect 17 Downriver communities through a network of recreational trails and greenways.
