Suppose that you have 100 people at your workplace … or a number that divides easily into or multiplies easily by 100. According to a variety of statistics and surveys, of those 100 in your workplace: Health• Americans: 17.7 will
develop cancer before age 65.
• Canadians: 14.7 will
develop cancer before age 65.
• Americans: 34 have visited
an ER in the past two years.
• Canadians: 38 have visited
an ER in the past two years.
• Americans: 27.8 men and
22.3 women smoke.
• Canadians: 30 men and
26.6 women smoke.
• 5.1 have diabetes.
• 60 have had sleep problems
a few nights of the week or more, and 40 experience
daytime sleepiness severe enough to interfere with
daily activities at least a few days each month.
• Americans: 33 suffer
from extreme stress, contributing to health problems,
poor relationships, and lost productivity at work.
• Canadians: 43 are frequently
stressed about jobs, families, or finances. Internet• 69.5 use the internet.
• Americans: 80% of those
69.5 people have searched for information on at least
one of 17 health topics (e.g., a specific disease/medical
problem, a certain medical treatment or procedure,
diet/nutrition/vitamins, sexual health, etc.), but
75% of those 69.5 "only sometimes," "hardly ever,"
or "never" check the source and date of health information
found online!
• Americans: 4 admit to
having made an online drug purchase.
• 55 regularly or always
fake their web identity. Work-Related• Americans: 8.2 full-time
workers (aged 18 to 64) used illicit drugs in the
past month and 8.8 used alcohol heavily in the past
month. The highest level of illicit drug use was in the "accommodations and food services" category (16.9 per 100) and the lowest level was in the "utilities" category (3.8 per 100). Workers in the "healthcare and social assistance" category came fourth from the bottom of 19 categories, and ranked at 6.1 per 100. The highest level of heavy alcohol use was found in the "construction" category (15.9 per 100) with the lowest in the "educational services" category (4 per 100). Workers in the "healthcare and social assistance" category came second from the bottom, at 4.3 per 100. • Canadians: 10 to 20 are
considered problem drinkers, 2 to 7 take part in
illicit drug use, and 2 to 3 use prescription drugs
that affect decision-making abilities.
• Americans: 7.0 will have
experienced a major depressive episode in the past
year.
• Americans: 4.5 full-time
workers have been injured on the job.
• Canada: 5 of 100 male
workers and 2 of 100 female workers have suffered
an on-the-job injury.
• 15 to 20 are procrastinators.
• Of every 100 minutes
spent talking, 60 minutes involve gossiping about
relationships and personal experiences.
• 22 work more than 48
hours per week. Life• Americans: More than
50 do not engage in physical activity at levels consistent
with public health recommendations.
• Canadians: 48 are classified
as "inactive" during their leisure time and 25 usually
sit most of the day.
• Americans: 88 (out of
100) women and 66 (out of 100) men wash their hands
after using a public restroom.
• Americans: More than
50 drink coffee every day.
• Canadians: More than
63 drink coffee on a daily basis and 81 drink coffee
