Some numbers about females from the CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Injury Fact Book (November 2006): • Approximately 1.5 million
women are raped or physically assaulted by an intimate
partner each year in the United States.
• In eight out of 10 rape
cases, the victim knew the perpetrator.
• One in four American
women has been physically assaulted or raped by an
intimate partner.
• Nearly two-thirds of
women who report being raped, physically assaulted,
or stalked since age 18 were victimized by a current
or former husband, cohabitating partner, boyfriend,
or date.
• 54% of female rapes occur
before age 18, and of these, 22% occur before age
12.
• Women are more likely
than men to attempt suicide.
• 76% of hospitalizations
for hip fractures were women.
