What about Canadian ERs? Here are some stats from a September 14, 2005 press release from the Canadian Institute for Health Information:

• 57% of patient visits were for less-urgent or non-urgent conditions.
• More than 80% of patients were discharged to their home or their place of residence; only 11% needed to be admitted for further treatment in hospital.
• Only .5% of visits were by patients considered to be severely ill, requiring life-saving interventions.
• 62% of ER visits in 2003–2004 were by patients aged 16 to 64.
• According to a 2004 survey, 38% of Canadians, 34% of Americans, and 30% of the population in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK had visited an ER in the past two years.
• Half of all ER patients were seen by a physician within 51 minutes or less, 10% waited 10 minutes or less, and 10% waited three hours or more.
• Patients were most likely to go to an ER between 8am and 8pm, with 11am the peak arrival time. The least busy time of day was 6am.
• According to statistics from Ontario, hospitals in rural health regions have a higher proportion of non-urgent cases seeking treatment in ERs than hospitals in urban health regions.
