May 11–17 is National Nursing Home Week. Here is some information about nursing homes in the United States and Canada. USAAccording to the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging's Aging Services: The Facts page: • There are more than 1.4
million nursing home residents and more than 900,000
individuals living in assisted living residences
in the United States.
• An individual's average
age at entering a nursing home is 79.
• By 2026, the population
of Americans aged 65 and older will double to 71.5
million.
• There are 16,100 certified
nursing homes, 39,500 assisted living facilities,
2,240 continuing care retirement communities, and
more than 300,000 units of Section 202 affordable
senior housing available in the United States.
• The average daily cost
for a private room in a nursing home is $213 ($77,745
annually) and the average daily cost for a semi-private
room in a nursing home is $189 ($68,985 annually).
• The average monthly cost
of living in an assisted living facility is $2,969,
or $35,628 annually. And the average monthly rate
for assisted living facilities that charge additional
fees for Alzheimer's and dementia care is $4,270,
or $51,240 annually.
• Approximately 21% of
all individuals working in health services are employed
by nursing and residential care facilities. CanadaAccording to Statistics Canada's document Residential Care Facilities 2005/2006: • There were 4,921 residential
care facilities (which include homes for the aged,
facilities for persons with a mental disorder, and
other facilities) in Canada serving some 235,916
residents at the end of the 2005/2006 financial year,
which represented an increase of 2.3% in residents
served over the previous year.
• Homes for the aged dominated
the residential care industry, accounting for 49%
of facilities, 82% of beds and 80% of revenues. There
were 2,086 homes for the aged, which served some
196,242 residents and generated some $11 billion
in revenue.
• 53.7% of facilities for
the elderly were privately owned, and accounted for
48.8% of beds.
• These facilities employed
some 117,746 full-time and 95,514 part-time employees,
who worked 427.5 million hours, generating $8.8 billion
in salaries and wages. Meanwhile, Stats Can's 2006 document A Portrait of Seniors in Canada reports: • The number of seniors
in Canada is projected to increase from 4.2 million
to 9.8 million between 2005 and 2036, and seniors'
share of the population is expected to almost double,
increasing from 13.2% to 24.5%. Between 2036 and
2056, the number of seniors is projected to increase
from 9.8 million to 11.5 million, with their share
of the total population projected to rise from 24.5%
to 27.2%. An article in the May 2006 Mending Medicare supplement published by policyalternatives.ca said that private nursing home care costs between $40,000 and $70,000 per year, depending on the community. A June 2002 report entitled The Status of Canadian Nursing Home Care: Universality, Accessibility, and Comprehensiveness showed that the per diem a patient had to pay for nursing home costs ranged widely between $18 and $160, with the amount paid depending on the province a person resided in, income, and whether the accommodations were private, semi-private, or standard.
