Trivia: Headaches

By MedHunters Staff

In honor of Headache Awareness Month, here is some information about headaches, otherwise known as cephalalgia.

Types of Headaches

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke  (NINDS) lists
four types of headache:

Vascular: This group of headaches involve blood vessel dilation or swelling as the major component in the production of pain. The most common type of vascular headache is the migraine. Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from migraines, which are most commonly experienced between the ages of 15
and 55; about 75% of sufferers are women and 25% are men.

Other examples are toxic headaches, which are produced by fevers or environmental exposures (e.g., pollution, allergens, fragrances); cluster headaches, which are severe, recurrent, short-lasting headaches, which typically occur in younger people (aged 20 to 40) and affect men more than women, at a rate of about 2-3:1; and headaches resulting from high blood pressure.

Tension (muscle contraction): These headaches result from tightening or tensing the facial and neck muscles.  Tension headaches of the episodic type are usually triggered by temporary stress, anxiety, fatigue, or anger. Chronic-type tension headaches may result from anxiety or depression, sleep problems, etc.   Most adults will experience a tension headache in their lives – some estimates say about 78% of adults experience them, while others say up to 90% experience them!

Traction: These headaches result from traction on intracranial structures by masses (e.g., tumors, hematomas, abscesses).

Inflammatory: These headaches result from tissue inflammation (e.g., sinus disorders).

But beyond the types, how many different kinds of headaches are there? WebMD
reports that 150 diagnostic headache categories have been established.

What Should I Do About Headaches?

As everyone knows, not every headache requires medical attention or prescription medication; some headaches can be prevented by stress reduction, relaxation techniques, getting adequate sleep, making diet changes, and/or taking over-the-counter pain relievers.

The National Headache Foundation recommends that you see your healthcare provider if your headache:

  1. is sudden and severe
  2. occurs with fever, stiff neck, or uncontrollable vomiting
  3. causes confusion or loss of consciousness
  4. is persistent, when previously you've been headache free
  5. is accompanied by numbness, weakness, or vision loss
  6. begins after the age of fifty years
  7. begins after head injury or other trauma
  8. interferes with your ability to function normally at work or in social situations
  9. requires medication more than two days per week.

And they offer the Seven Healthy Habits of Headache Sufferers:

Diet: Eat regular meals, avoiding foods and drinks that are
known to trigger headache attacks;

Sleep: Maintain a regular sleeping schedule, including weekends
and vacations;

Stress
: Implement stress reduction techniques into your daily
life;

Headache diary: Keep a headache diary of when your headaches
occur, along with any triggers, and share the information with your healthcare
provider;

See your healthcare provider
: Make an appointment with your
healthcare provider to specifically discuss your headache;

Be a partner in your headache care: Be informed, be a
participant in your treatment and be an advocate for your headache care; and,

Education: Stay apprised of the latest headache news and
treatment options by visiting headaches.org.

Comment from Aron Airall
On Tuesday March 10, 2009 and Tuesday April 14, 2009 had the most amazing opportunity to participate in Ask the Wellness Doctor conference calls with Jeff Spencer (Lance Armstrong’s chiropractor) and some of the best chiropractors in the world. As a result of the economic climate, people need chiropractic care more than ever due to chronic lifestyle conditions resulting from poor health choices. For those of you who are business owners or wellness coordinators, chiropractors can help your company save money by increasing your employees’ peace of mind, decreasing absensteeism, decreasing presenteeism, decreasing health care costs, allowing you to receive better health care premiums and lower rates for car/life insurance. When you change, your world changes Sometimes crisis happen in your life to change your perspective. The reason why many of you are chronically ill are because of things that you did or did not do. Do you want to be well? Do you know what well is? Does feeling good have anything to do with your health? About exercise There are 3 types of exercise Cardiovascular Musculoskeletal (Increased muscle mass burns calories, aging decreases muscle mass) Flexibility When you take advantage of all three types of exercise you have more endurance, strength, and flexibility in all areas of your life. Did you know that your posture mirrors your physiology? When you exercise, eat right, and sleep well, you think well. When you change your posture you also change your mood. Everything counts. Walking three times a week for 30 minutes is beneficial. Did you know that without physical stress from regular activity your body can not absorb the calcium in your food? The following methods are good for younger clients or athletes but not so good for anyone over 60 years of age (use tubing). Walk 10 paces straight up a hill, turn and walk 45 degrees across the hill for the width of the street. Continue 10 paces up, and then recross at 45 degrees in the other direction. Repeat this process 5-6 times. This stabilizes the ankle, foot, and knee and causes many muscles to get activated throughout the body that otherwise may never get exercised. For those of you who run, practice running in a zig zag pattern (similar to what football players do with auto tires). This is best done in sand because feet tend to sink in a drag through the sand. By doing so the medial and lateral stabilizers in your ankles and feet are exercised as well as the knees. Dr. Logan found that runners who participated in this exercise had improved marathon and more importantly their injury rates decreased dramatically. On exercise: If you exercise you will automatically eat better and sleep better. If not, you are not exercising or eating right. Sleep in absolute darkness from 6.5 to 7.5 hours in your bed on a regular basis on your back or side with one pillow (preferably a cervical pillow) and if necessary a pillow under or between your legs. Do you sleep on your stomach? Dr. Logan used 3 methods with his patients that were highly successful. Tape table tennis balls on each side of the abdomen 2-3 inches from your belly button. It usually takes 3-4 nights of interrupted sleep to break the pattern.Tying a belt around your knees and securing them together. Use a small, soft pillow between your knees to prevent pelvic torque use an extremely large body pillow next to your body to prevent rolling over during sleep. Place your pillow on the side away from the mattress. This method is not as effective as the first two. About Nutrition Eating healthy is not about going on a diet, it’s about making eating the right foods and making consistent healthy food choices. Organic food preferably or the best of what is available. Water keeps the discs in between the vertebrae in your spine hydrated, relieving the pressure on your spine and preventing unnecessary spinal problems from manifesting. What can chiropractic do for you? Chiropractors check the integrity of your nervous system and utilize the power of a chiropractic adjustment to turn on your body’s inner healing power, when given enough time to perform the healing miracles that chiropractic is famous for. Chiropractic care provides your body with relief from symptoms (get you out of trouble), structural and postural changes, leading to functional improvement (slowing down the process of spinal degeneration to a point of reasonable correction), leading to a stabilized and healthy spine, improved quality of life, and if decide to continue, the wellness experience and all that chiropractic has to offer. Are you willing to commit to a lifetime of chiropractic today? Chiropractors are doctors of connection. Your body is a self healing, self regulating system. Your nervous system is the master controller. Chiropractors help by removing subluxations (blockages) to the flow of life within you so you can better connect to your source. Are you connected to your source? Are moving towards wellness or illness today? Would you like your family to experience the healing miracles that chiropractic is famous for? If you don’t take care of it now are your health problems going to get better or worse? Is it going to take more time or less time? Is it going to take more money or less money? How many of you if you can save the life of someone you loved if it did not endanger your life would you want to do so? Want you to think of one person locally or globally that’s suffering, the mother with the migraine, back, shoulder, and/or neck condition, the child with ADHD, the uncle with the disability, your family and friends with asthma, chronic fatigue, the raging sciatica down the leg, eating disorders, emotional issues, your family and friends that are into health and wellness, and give them one of our articles on chiropractic. A portion of their examination fees will be donated to Spinal Missions, a non-profit group formed by students that have a burning desire to aid the people of the Honduras in dealing with health care issues for the month of May, June, and July. With your help, the top needs are financial assistance, face paper, hand sanitizer, rehab equipment, toys, and equipment. If you live in the area and would like us to pick up your donated items or would like to make a financial donation please don’t hesitate to call 647.991.KIRO or visit http://www.spinalmissions.org/page3.html. Thank you for your donations, your time, and support. Love and appreciate you! In health and wellness, Aron Glenford Airall President, Chiropractic Health Associates
