Trivia: Men's Health

In honor of National Men's Health Week (June 9–15, 2008), here is some information about men's health.

The CDC's Men's Health page reports that:

• There are approximately 144.5 million males in the USA (2004).
• 23% of men smoke (2004).
• 70.7% of men aged 20 to 74 years are overweight and 30.2% are obese (2001–2004).
• 26.9% of men aged 20 to 74 years have hypertension and 16.1% have elevated blood pressure (2001–2004).
• The top three causes of death in men in 2004 were: heart disease; cancer; accidents.

The CDC Injury Fact Book, which was released in November 2006, reports:

• Although females attempt suicide more than males, males are four times more likely to die from suicide; year 2002 numbers show males accounted for 88% of the suicides in the USA.
• Males and children under age four are at the greatest risk for near-drowning, and males accounted for 80% of drowning in the USA in 2002.
• A national survey of high school students found that 6.1% of male students and 11.9% of female students reported having been sexually assaulted.
• Approximately 834,700 men and 1.5 million women are raped or physically assaulted by an intimate partner each year in the USA.

Some other items:

• Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in men other than skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008 in the USA, there will be about 186,320 new cases of prostate cancer and about 28,660 deaths. Overall, about one man in six will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only one man in 35 will die of the disease. Lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death in men and women.
• The CIA World Factbook reports that the life expectancy of men in the USA is 75.15 years.
• A hand hygiene survey released in September 2007 found that 66% of men and 88% of women wash their hands after using a public restroom.
