The XVI International AIDS Conference was held in Toronto in mid-August, and here are some interesting items from some of the poster presentations: Healthcare Workers & HIV/AIDS• We do not know how many
healthcare workers have occupationally-acquired AIDS
in Canada and elsewhere, and published reports of
documented cases or possible occupationally-acquired
HIV cases greatly underestimate the number of infected
healthcare workers, especially nurses. As an example,
in April 2006, Heath Canada published cumulative
reports of eight healthcare workers with occupationally-acquired
AIDS, while the Workers Compensation Board of Canada
data shows that 109 registered nurses had been compensated
for time lost as a result of occupationally-acquired
HIV during the seven years between 1998–2004.
• A Polish study looked
at 298 HIV exposures in 2003–2004, of which
131 were occupational exposures in healthcare workers,
and found that healthcare workers started post-exposure
prophylaxis earlier than other populations, but unlike
other populations, frequently didn't follow the full
post-exposure prophylaxis schedule. Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say? Tell us what you think! Read and post comments for this article. Like this article? Read more!
