Trivia: Nurses on the Small and Large Screens

 

Below is some trivia about nurses gathered from the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) in spring 2008:

• There were more than 19,000 nurse characters listed in movies and TV programs (some are recurring roles).
• Of these nurses, 208 were identified as a "Head Nurse" and nine as a "Chief Nurse."
• Of these nurse characters, some of the more interesting character names include: Freaky Nurse, Fake Nurse, Burn Ward Nurse/Lizard Man, Nurse Peanut Butter Cup, Wolf Nurse II, Unable and Scared Nurse, First Pretty Nurse, Buxom Nurse, Fuming Nurse, Cranky Labor Nurse, Sexy Nurse, Chainsaw Nurse, Ferret-faced Nurse, Nurse Pertbottom, Sexy Whoville Nurse, I Love Sanity Nurse, Obnoxious Nurse, Nurse with Hot Colon, Suppository Nurse, Larynx Nurse.
• Of these nurse characters, there were approximately 300 specifically identified as a "Male Nurse." Additionally, there were more than 1,000 males playing nurses that were not specifically identified as "male nurse."
• Some popular names for the nurses include "Nurse Susan," "Nurse Nancy," and "Nurse Sally."
• There were two "Kind Nurse" characters (and two "Kindly Nurse" characters), three "Angelic Nurse" characters, and six "Evil Nurse" characters.
• There were two "Angry Nurse" and one "Smiling Nurse" characters.
• The most recurring specialties? There were more than 150 ER Nurse characters (plus 22 Triage Nurses and 12 Casualty Nurses) and about 100 ICU Nurses (plus one Critical Care Nurse) characters. Admitting Nurse, Charge Nurse, Floor Nurse, and Ward Nurse were also popular.
• There were 15 actors with the last name "Nurse," as well as 13 behind-the-scenes "Nurses" (i.e., in directing, make-up, etc.).
• There were 119 TV programs and movies (including foreign language productions) with "Nurse" in the title, of which the most unusual are: "The Bad Boy's Joke on the Nurse" (1901), "Happy Hooligan, Double-Cross Nurse" (1917), "From Nurse to Worse" (1940), "Nurse on Wheels" (1963), "The Wacky Adventures of Dr. Boris and Nurse Shirley" (1995), and "Ja zuster, nee zuster" (2002), which is translated as "Yes Nurse! No Nurse!"
