Think heart disease and stroke are limited to we indulgent folk in the West? Not so! The Atlas of Heart Disease and Stroke, released by the World Health Organization, shows that heart disease and stroke kill about 17 million people each year, which is almost one-third of all deaths, worldwide – and 60% of the global burden of coronary heart disease occurs in the developing world. They anticipate that, by 2020, heart disease and stroke will become the world's leading cause of death and disability, and fatalities will increase to over 20 million per year. And, not surprisingly, a substantial number of the deaths are attributed to smoking, which increases the risk of dying from heart disease and stroke by two- to three-fold.
